The First Annual Animal Hospice Awareness Day is November 5, 2011.
Animal Hospice awareness day’s main goal is to educate animal lovers on caring and ethical medical options for end of life care of their beloved pets. When cherished family pets reach their older years or are diagnosed with a terminal sickness, most owners often feel saddened and dread making medical decisions for their pet. Animal Hospice Awareness Day informs pet owners to know about the growing trend of hospice care for their pets to help them live as comfortable as possible at a difficult time at the end of their lives.
Hospice care for pets is very similar to the in-home medical care available for terminally ill people. Pet hospice care is to provide appropriate nursing care tailored specifically to a pet’s needs. The goal is to help a person’s pet maintain a good quality of life while managing pain, nutritional and fluid intake, and provide for the comfort of the pet in the last days to weeks and in some cases even months. Hospice care is not always the right decision for every pet owner but the option of these services is not well known to the general public. The knowledge of these veterinary services ultimately can aid in giving pet owners more options for end of life care for their pets while accurately accessing their quality of life.
Dr. Larry Magnuson of Caring Pathways (www.caringpathways.com), a Colorado owned End of Life Veterinary pet care practice, will be available to answer questions regarding new trends in end of life pet care to commemorate this important date to Colorado pet owners. www.iaahpc.org/ The International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative care.
